License Hints for Windows Server 2025/2022

For correct licensing of the Standard Edition and Datacenter Edition with the chosen precessor equipment – 2 CPUs each with 16 physical cores – a 32 core license (16-core base license + 16-core extension) is required.

Within this licensing you gain 2 VM rights with the Standard Edition and unlimited VM rights with the Datacenter Edition.
If you need licenses for more virtual machines with the Standard Edition, Microsoft provides a respective increase of 2 virtual instances for a repeated licensing of all cores. This means: For the chosen CPU outfit, you acquire a license for 64 cores (16-core base license + 3x 16-core extension) for a total of 4 VM licenses, or a license for 96 cores (16-core base license + 5x 16-core extension) for a total of 6 VM licenses. Consistently, you add 32 cores in the licensing for every additional pair of VMs needed. Note: The Datacenter Edition will pay off when you want to apply 14 VMs or more.

For correct licensing of the Standard Edition and Datacenter Edition all physical cores in the server must be licensed.
Each CPU will be counted with at least 8 cores and a system with at least 16 cores.
